HYWWP May 2010 Newsletter

May Happenings!!

Happy National Scrapbooking Day!!! Are you celebrating the big day for our obsession this weekend? Whatever your plans are, and certainly if you don't have any plans, please stop by the board this weekend and join us in our NSD online crop! There will be lots of challenges to help get the mojo flowing and prizes to keep your stash growing! There will also be challenges to help you get to know our members (and their galleries) a little better too!

The crop kicks off another month of weekly prize challenges, with the prizes this month comming from our sponsor for May, Crafter's Companion. Crafter's Companion has been extremely generous and donated not only sets of rubber stamps for the DT and for prizes, but also donated a LARGE prize for a month long challenge we'll have going on during May. Please check out all of the products available at their website!!

As our Crop kicks off our month of fun, May kicks off a couple of things. It's the beginning of Graduation and Wedding Seasons! Come by the site for card sketches and ideas for your card giving needs! Don't forget cards can be gifts too! What bride or new grad couldn't use a pack of thank you cards??

Hope to see you around the board soon!!

Teacher Gift Giving

It's May and almost the end of the school year. Whoa! Seriously? Showing your appreciation through gifts can be quite costly. As a teacher myself, I would like to share some ideas that will hopefully make teacher gift giving simple, thoughtful and inexpensive.

Teachers LOVE gift cards. They may seem impersonal, but they fit everyone! Trust me. Teachers have plenty of teacher themed trinkets (mugs, signs, magnets, etc.). So put the money you were going to spend on an apple mug and put it toward a small gift card. If you know your child's teacher, you will be able to find the perfect gift card. My favorites have included those from the coffee shop, the book store, Target, WalMart, and the local nursery. The best thing is that you can use your scrappy card making talents to make a thoughtful card to match the theme of your gift card. Book store card = Wind down from the school year with a good book. Coffee Shop = I hope you have a "latte" a fun/relaxation this summer. Nursery gift card = Hope your summer blooms just as you wish. The possibilities are endless.

Another gift I absolutely loved was a beach towel, sunscreen, and a magazine inside a beach tote. The parent included a handmade beach themed card wishing me a great summer of rest and relaxation. This gift could come together quickly for less than $20 depending on where you purchase your items.

Teachers always need thank you cards. Whip up a packet of thank you cards, wrap them in some pretty ribbon and give for the teacher to have on hand. I've also seen parents make personalized clipboards, post it note holders, and pen and pencil holders.

One year I received a card that had a picture on the front of my student holding a big sign that said "thanks!" I thought that was so cute and personal! Inside was a thoughtful note from my student.

Most importantly, nothing makes a teacher feel more special than reading a heartfelt note from a parent that gives examples of ways he/she helped the child that year. Placed inside a homemade card made just for the teacher and it's a winning gift.

Have Your Way With Paper Newsletter - April 2010

Hi friends! Hard to believe another month has flown by, and while March at Paper was a pretty quiet month, cards and layouts and wall hangings continued to flood the gallery. In the quiet, seeds were planted, plans were made and as we enter spring, a time for new things, our community too will blossom. We're going to do things a little differently, a little more focused on giving back to our members. We've always had more than a few challenges and sketches available to provide inspiration. Starting this month, there will be prizes given for some lucky members that complete those challenges! There will be one 'prize challenge' each week!! Challenges will be posted on Fridays, just in time for you to plan your scrappy weekend! We hope you stop by to check it out starting Friday, April 2nd!

We are VERY excited to be working with Cosmo Cricket as our sponsor this month!! This company and their products just ooze fun! If you don't believe me, check out their website! You'll also find an amazing idea gallery, directions on where to get your hands on their MUST HAVE products, and even an escape hatch if your hubby catches you browsing for "more paper?? Seriously?" Be sure to keep an eye on our team this month to see the wonders they work with the Joyride, Material Girl and Garden Variety lines we can't wait to work with!

How long since you stopped by the boards to say Hi? Or the gallery to leave some love, or leave a layout to be loved on? No matter...we're always glad to see you!! Happy Spring!

Easter Photo Tips

Easter is right around the corner, and it’s time to think about those pictures we will want to scrap once the holiday has passed. Here are some ideas to get you started. You may even want to start snapping those pictures before Sunday!

*The Easter Bunny shot…Need I say more?
*Dying eggs - Lots of great opportunities to get some very colorful close ups!
*Looking spiffy for the day! - Outdoor pictures are always great for showing off those Easter outfits.
*Pictures of the Easter decorations – Wreaths, rugs, serving plates, etc!
*Pictures of the Easter food table – Be sure to take it BEFORE eating and not with people eating at the time the picture is taken. Take some closer shots of the food that makes the Easter meal the Easter meal!
*The Easter Baskets – Wouldn’t it be a fun layout to show the before, during and after the Easter basket madness?
*The Egg Hunt – Get that camera setting ready for action!
*Spring animals – There are lots of ducks, geese, chicks, baby birds, etc around!
*Blooming flowers- How beautiful are tulips and daffodils? Capture those and use them to accent your spring layouts.
*Of course, don’t forget those family pictures that include YOU too!

From the Cosmo Cricket website:
To prove that they were certifiably insane, three years ago Eric and Julie Comstock, two artists, decided to start their own company. They launched Cosmo Cricket in the summer of 2006 at the Craft and Hobby Association trade show. The idea was to have the best designed paper, really cool embellishments and a lot of fun. Things took off much faster than predicted and the first year was a scramble just trying to keep up. However, now, three years later, they are running like a well oiled machine that only has a few loose bolts.

Here's how they do it: A really great sales guy. Lindsay Moore has been with Cosmo Cricket since the beginning. Julie called him up one day and said that they were starting a scrapbooking company and they were told he was the best. She continued that they would love to have him work for them and that there was one other thing....... they had no money and he wouldn't get paid for at least three months. He of course said, "Sign me up!" Because of his charming personality, or the fact that they didn't want him getting away, they decided to make him a partner. "He's stuck with us now," says Julie with a wicked grin.

f you would like to learn even more about Cosmo Cricket and the people that make up the company, visit their blog where you are sure to find more information than you could possibly have ever wanted.

March Happenings!!
Well, the last newsletter wished you a happy 2010, and we sure hope two months in, the year is treating you well! Have you embraced any new opportunities? Held strong to resolutions?

Three members of our internet home are embracing a new opportunity now. Rita (mykidsmom4ever), Krissy (aremid), and Lisa (lisa9er) have assumed the duties of ownership as Wendi decided it was time for her to step down. I know all three were honored that Wendi entrusted ‘her baby’ to them.

It’s a bittersweet time for her, seeing the old become new, and all of the cosmetic changes going on. It’s bittersweet in a way for the new owners as well. They will embrace this opportunity to help the community grow, and resolve to keep the closeness in true friendships found there.

If it’s been a while since you stopped by the site, we invite you to come over, check out the new ‘paint on the walls’ and jump in on a scrappy challenge or two! There will be fun with new and exciting sponsors, contests, and prizes any scrapper would love! The door is always open, c’mon over!

Everything Old is New Again – Repurposing for Scrapping!

Go green and have some fun scrapping! Below are a few ideas on going green with your creations. Hope you decide to try an idea and share it in our gallery:

*Buttons - use those extra buttons for a card, layout or project!
*Cut up strips of old clothes and make flowers and ribbons.
*Use other pieces of cloth to help clean stamps.
*Reuse the chipboard tags from newly purchased clothes, some are very artistic – you can also paint, stamp, etc. to make them your own.
*Junk mail/newspapers could also be cut into strips for handmade flowers or interesting embellies.
*Decorate old CD’s/DVD’s to make fridge magnets.
*Have you ever thought about using your cereal boxes for scrapbooking? The boxes are made of chipboard! Cutout any shape, cover it with scrapbook paper or paint, and PRESTO! you've got your own recycled, unique embellishment!
*Recycle jars: An old jar with a metal lid and a jelly jar are great storage for small stamp pads or small stamps and brads...
*Recycle greeting cards: Cut out those cute graphics on greeting cards and use them as custom-made embellishments on your next layout!
*Repurpose gift wrapping. Instead of throwing away used wrapping paper or gift bags and tags, consider including pieces of them in a holiday or birthday scrapbook as page decorations and colorful reminders of special gifts - and a fun new way to recycle!
*The most obvious: Remember to recycle. Scrapbooking by its very nature relies on a renewable resource - paper. Paper also is recyclable, so remember to recycle your scraps if you can't use them for projects.

HYWWP Newsletter, January 2010

Happy 2010! We made it into another year and I don't know about you, but I am really excited for a fresh start! Im embracing the new year with open arms and all the wonderful pportunities that will come with it.

I'm excited for two scrapbook related resolutions I have made for myself....to journal more and to scrapbook the little things. I see it in magazines and I admire the way the creator catches just the right moment and finds just the right words for fleeting moments that are just as special as a birthday, a scholastic goal and other landmark moments we regularly scrapbook.

But, this year, no more "I wish I would have thought of that!" I'm GOING to think of it, and do it! Wont you join me? Whatever your personal New Years resolution(s) are...document them!

Believe in them! Believe in yourself! You got this! The rest is simply a beautiful page just waiting to happen!

Tie It Up!

May Arts was super generous to us as a sponsor this month. The oodles and oodles of ribbon are just fantastic! Why is it that we have to actually touch the ribbon to get the full experience?

As the ribbon fell through my fingers, I was thinking of all the ways to use them. Many of these ribbons are just too special to be used simply on a layout or card (although those would be preserved forever!). I went on a hunt to find some creative ways to use them. Antuanette Wheeler seems to have the most comprehensive list out there. The following are on my “Ways to use the May Arts Ribbons” list ;). I can’t be credited for anything besides the commentary…..

*Tie small bits of ribbon onto a larger piece of ribbon for a unique border.
Uh, yeah, I want to try this!

*Weave ribbons to use as placements, wallhangings, etc.
I have an idea. I hope it works out in actuality and not just in my head. :)

*Use fabric stiffener to make ribbon bookmarks.
I’ve seen this, but I need to actually do it! What great little gifts for the insides of cards! The perfect gesture!

*Use long/wide ribbons to store and display barrettes and pins.
So what if I have short hair, I do wear some barrettes (and am always losing them!). Another great little gift!

*Wrap around an old or damage photo frame.
Don’t we all have these around?

*Sew ribbon to your plain dishtowels.
Yep, let’s embellish those and make doing dishes a pleasure. Ok, I admit, a bit of a stretch…

*Tie large ribbons to the backs of chairs for a fun lunch or dinner.
This makes me want to throw a dinner party just to have an excuse to try this out!

*Tie ribbons onto your hangers, drawer pulls and shower curtain.
Pretty up the everyday!

*Tie a ribbon onto any zipper pulls you have!
Duh, why didn’t I think of this?!?!?! I have the perfect little black purse for travel that screams for some unique-ness! My poor black suitcase could have used a little dressing up too before I took it to Vegas!

HYWWP December 2009 Newsletter

December Happenings!!
I think December is, by far, the most beautiful month of the year. Its a time when everything is wrapped in sparkly splendor of silver and gold, trees glowing with tinsil and twinkle lights.

Its when darling little children are dressed in beautiful dresses and handsome suits, sitting atop the lap of the jolly man in red, whispering their deepest wants into his ear. Its snowmen and sleighrides...where red makes a striking contrast to the white snow that blankets our green winter wonderland.

It is fluffy soft or delicate heirloom stockings hanging above a crackling fire in a home just bursting with the scents of home baked
goods in the oven.

Its friends and family... near and far. A time for reflection and thankfulness for the greatest gift given in a small barn in Bethlehem. Its a time for the festival of lights... eight of them on a beautiful
candelabra and spinning the dreidel for little chocolate pieces.

Whatever December holds for you, big or small... May you be richly blessed and have a wonderful Holiday season! (Oh! ...And don't forget to clear that memory card, charge those batteries and get a tape for that video camera! Last thing you want, is
for something to go wrong during the countless photo opportunities this month! :)

Surviving December

December. It’s busy. It’s full. Let’s face it, it can be downright stressful. We need to attempt to take some time to enjoy and embrace what this season holds….family, friends, traditions, and the everyday events. I’m hoping these simple suggestions will help you capture in words and/or pictures this season of joy.

*Keep those receipts and tags. They can make great embellishments for future layouts and be wonderful keepsakes to look back on someday.

*We often take pictures of the “after the decorations are up” pictures. Why not capture a few candids of the actual decorating? Those are the memories you want to remember.

*Tis the Season of Baking. Make copies of the holiday recipes you used, take pictures of everyone helping out in the kitchen (or have someone take a pic of you in the kitchen!), and keep those grocery receipts.

*What are your favorite holiday books? Snap a picture of those books or even better yet, take a picture of reading those books as a family or an older child reading to younger child.

*Keep your child’s wishlist. Have them write down their wishes in their writing. If they can’t write, have them draw what they want. These will be PRICELESS.

*Keep a copy of your child’s letter to Santa. Even better, have him/her include why she/he deserves the items on the list. Even more fantastic…scrap a picture of them working hard on this letter.

*Make a Top 5 List of Family Traditions. Lists are easy and make for great journaling.

HYWWP Novermber '09 Newsletter

November Happenings!!
November? Already? That can only mean one thing... the holidays are just around the corner! (eek!)

November is laced with trees in full autumn color, thankful families gathering around the table to celebrate their blessings, children bundled in warm sweaters, holiday bizarres, cornucopias, Black Friday adventures... the list could go on and on!

Aside from the obvious blessings such as family, friends and health, I encourage you to step outside yourself and evaluate where you are. What are you the most thankful for at this time in your life? What has changed in your life since last November when you last declared your list? Document it. Are you having the same traditional Thanksgiving buffet dinner or are you going to try something new? Write it down. Big or small, November is bursting with wonderful photographing and scrapbooking opportunities! How will you embrace yours?

Turkey Day Photo Tips

Here are some photo tips to make you want to develop those Turkey Day photos on Thanksgiving evening!

1.Don't be afraid to pose your subjects. You will NOT regret it after seeing the photos!

2.Be above eye level! Get those cups, glasses, dishes, bottles, out of the main focus.

3.What a wonderful time to get those generation photos when you have the whole family together.

4.Classic Dinner Table Photo (remember take from above and don't get anyone eating!) Ahhh...smiling faces getting ready to dive in. That's how you remember this day so get a shot of it! Just remember to NOT get people eating. NO ONE looks good eating. :)

5.The Turkey Carving - screams Thanksgiving and you can spotlight the special person carving.

6.Table settings and centerpieces. Memories come flooding back once we see these familiar decorations.

7.Home Sweet Home. Take a picture of the outside of the home where Thanksgiving is hosted - preferably with some family members!

8.Get in the kitchen. Get some prep shots of the food. Does Grandma always do the mashed potatoes? Get a shot of her with the mixer. Does Aunt Sue make some mean sweet pototoes? Get a pic of that. And, over coffee and pie, get the recipes and tuck those away to put in your scrapbooks as well.

9.While the kitchen is hopping with dinner preparations, what does the rest of the family do? Watch football, play football, play card games, geek at the parade? Snap, snap!

1.Last, but defintely not least......Turn over the camera and get in some pictures yourself!

Jillibean Soup
From the Jillibean Soup website: So why do you scrap? I’ve asked myself this question several times and my only explanation is that I love it. I’m completely obsessed. Not only is it a creative outlet but it gives me great joy when I’m crafting. Also, I get to buy some oh-so very cute, yummy, scrumptious papers and embellishments. Yes, I’m a collector of scrapbook stuff. Plain and simple, I have way too much and keep buying more. Like you, I LOVE this hobby. I’ve never had so much passion for anything in my life – with the exception of my family.

After numerous discussions with my hubby, lots of research and lots of prayer, I decided I had the guts and gusto to try out my own line of scrapbooking materials. With the recent return of kraft paper into the craft industry I decided that my first line would be designed and printed on kraft paper and I love it. It’s different, it’s fun, and it can be used for all types of paper crafting! It was difficult to find kraft paper that is acid free and lignin free in a folio size, so we custom manufactured our kraft paper – it’s one of a kind and it’s made from 100% recycled stock.

So why “Jillibean Soup”? “Jillibean” was a nickname that a childhood neighbor called me. “Soup” just sounded good with Jillibean. It has allowed me to do some creative naming of products, packaging, and original marketing.

Jillibean Soup products are manufactured with close attention to color, detail and design. Jillibean Soup offers you fresh, innovative products of the best quality. We pride ourselves in finding the best ingredients and creating fun designs you can use forever. We hope you love them as much as we do!
